Judge Weill holds HCPDs in contempt

Saw this on TBA first.  TBA has updated his post with some background that is informative.

The Clarion Ledger is reporting the story.

On Monday, March 16, 2015, Judge Weill fined Hinds County Public Defender Michelle Purvis and Assistant PD Greg Spore $100 each when they objected to his assigning one of their cases to private counsel.

In the video accompanying the CL story, Ms. Purvis states that she was forcibly removed from the court.

WAPT story

According to WJTV, the public defenders and their supporters all wore black today to stand up to Judge Weill.

The National Association for Public Defense posted this on their website on March 12.   According to the post, the NAPD is preparing an amicus brief in support of the HCPD’s office.

Update (March 18, 2015) – the CL is reporting that  Bennie Thompson has asked the  U.S. Dept. of Justice to investigate.
